Forfeiting the blessings of God

Deuteronomy 5:29 “Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!”

Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”

God wants to shower his love on us. He longs to bless us, to lead us, to do good to us and to our children.  He expresses this often throughout His Word.  However, we can shut ourselves off from experiencing this full love if we go our own way; if we think our ways are better than the ways of obedience He has clearly laid out for us.  Every time our thoughts follow a pattern of “I know this is what the Bible says, but . . .“ we are setting ourselves up for loss, for something less than the great blessings God desires to pour into our lives.   Sometimes the immediate effect of obedience to God is loss in some way.  We may be persecuted, we may give up some immediate gratification in which self-centeredness can result, but in the end, we will always lose blessings with disobedience.  In the end, we will always gain blessings with obedience.  So “let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
