Psalm 119:143 “Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight.”
When we find ourselves in a fix, when troubling things creep up on us and suddenly put us in a tailspin, what on earth should we do? Life happens, as they say, and difficult and troubling things come to everyone. Yes, even the psalmist who wrote the words above, someone whom God used to speak to the rest of us through his Spirit, experienced anguish, and God permitted it. But in that situation the Spirit also led the psalmist to a glorious truth – God’s commandments, which are found only in his Word, were his delight.
What a powerful weapon is the Word of God. It has the power, when we set our mind on it and trust it, to completely reverse our thought patterns from those of extreme worry and anguish to utter joy and delight. How is this possible? It is possible because the Word of God changes our focus from what we are going through, to the One who sees us in all our circumstances and gives us the certainty that we can trust him, no matter what. We know that no matter the circumstances, He loves us, and He will watch over us. Incredible words like those in Psalm 121 have the power to change our perspective drastically, no matter in what situation we might find ourselves.
Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
So, are you one in trouble and anguish? Then turn to God’s Word. It’s filled with God’s Truth which can turn darkness to light, sorrow to joy, and death to life. Praise the name of the Lord!
