Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”
One of the reasons that I believe God exists is the fact than anything exists. Where did everything come from? What brought it about? When I think about anything, I realize that it came from something else. A child came from its parents. It didn’t just “come to be.” A house comes from materials like wood, which came from trees, and it involves a builder, who obviously existed before the house did. And the trees came from other trees that produced seeds. Everything is like this. Everything!
But what was the first cause? Where did the first tree come from, or the first human, or the first anything? Was it all just here? Nothing is like that, so how could that be? Did it just create itself? Again, nothing does that! Nothing! So, where did it all come from?
The vast majority of scientists tell us that it all came from a “Big Bang.” They say that everything existed in an incredibly dense, infinitesimally small, piece of matter that just exploded somehow. But, if so, where did that matter come from. No one has ever given me – or you – a satisfactory answer to that. Something just had to be that was other than matter to have caused matter to exist. That’s the only thing that can explain it. That’s the only possible explanation for a first cause. Something or someone had to have caused it. Otherwise, the existence of anything makes absolutely no sense.
The Bible gives us the answer and it’s the only satisfactory answer I have ever heard. The answer is given to us in the verse above. It tells us that the universe came from the Word of God. It refers us to a God that was before matter, and Who was not made of matter. It points to a Being that was before time, before space, and before matter. As John 1:1 put it, He is One Who “in the beginning” already “was.” That’s Who the Bible tells us God is. He is eternal. He created time. He is always everywhere – He created space. And He is Spirit, not matter, but He created all matter. I believe all of this by faith, but it’s not a blind faith, for as I look at everything around me, God is the only first cause that makes any sense.
So what about you? What do you believe? Or don’t you ever think about such things? The Bible tells us that “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world” (Psalm 19:1-4). So, as you look around you today, are you also listening?
You see, God wants us to know Him. He wants us to draw near to Him. But He has told us that “whoever would draw near to (him) must believe that he exists” (Hebrews 11:6). He has filled the universe with the evidence of this. All we have to do is look.
