Hebrews 1:6 “Let all God’s angels worship Him.”
One of the things the Bible does for us is open our eyes to things that we could not otherwise see. One such example is in the words above. The Bible lets us know that there are glorious spiritual beings called angels. It shows us that they are “higher” than humans in the sense that they are far more powerful than we are. For example, in 2 Kings 19:35 we are told of an angel that put to death 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night as they gathered to make war on Israel. In Genesis 19 we are told about two angels that visited Lot in the form of men, and who struck a large number of the men of Sodom blind in a moment as they tried to wickedly molest them. We know from the Scriptures that there are thousands upon thousands of angels. It was as Peter tried to defend Jesus with his sword as the mob came to arrest Him in the Garden of Gethsemane that Jesus rebuked him with these words: “Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53). By this Jesus was referring to the Roman legions that consisted of approximately 7,000 men. And in Revelation 5:11 the apostle John tells us that in his vision of heaven he heard “the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands” as they worshipped the Lamb of God. Then in the verse above, we see that these glorious, powerful, beings numbering “myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands” all worship the infinitely more glorious and powerful Jesus.
Isn’t it amazing, even appalling, then, that so many people who are all so much lower than the angels never worship the Jesus at all? Though the glorious angels all worship the Lord of glory, though the very “heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork,” although “Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge,” and “there is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard” (Psalm 19:1-3), yet many people never give Jesus a second thought. It’s a sad state of affairs, but, regrettably, it’s the way things are – at least for now. You see, the Lord has told us in His Word that “it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’ So then each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:11-12).
So, have you joined all the angels in worshipping the Lord? Have your eyes been opened to the glory of this One to Whom all the angels bow down in praise? May God help us to see the glory of the Lord, and may we, like the angels, understand the honor He is due. May we bow before Him with a willing heart in humble worship while we have opportunity. You see, we will all one day bow the knee to Him whether we are children of God or enemies of God, for “to which of the angels has He ever said, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’?” (Hebrews 1:13).
