Topics of Discussion – an Examination

Titus 2:3 “Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women . . . “

2 Timothy 2:2 “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”

If you are a Christian, do you discuss spiritual things with others God has placed in your life?  How much of your conversation with them is focused on Christ and His Word? The Bible calls believers to share the Word with those who have never heard the gospel or have never believed it.  In the words of what has come to be known as “the Great Commission” Jesus told His disciples to “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15).  But He has also called us to speak about His Word to other believers.

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is that of teaching (Romans 12:6-8), i.e., God has gifted certain believers with this ability more than others. However, all believers are called to teach in one way or another.  There are always other Christians with whom we should be discussing our faith.  This is particularly true of older believers, such as the “older women” of whom Paul speaks in the verse from his letter to Titus above.  Older women are to be those who train young women in the ways of truth.  Likewise, as Paul told Timothy, men are to be sharing the Word of God with other men, who in turn are to teach others as well.

But how much do we do this?  Are our discussions with other believers primarily about the weather, our hobbies, our jobs, and our families, or are we intentional about speaking to others about Christ?   Are we quick to talk to people about other people, yet hesitant to speak to them about the One we say we love more than all?  Does the topic of our discussions with others reflect a priority on the things of God?  Jesus told us that our mouth will speak of those things that fill our heart  (Luke 6:45).  Do our words reflect that we are filled with a love of God?

Something to think about in our conversations with others, for it’s something that God wants us to not only think about but also do, as He’s so clearly told us in His Word.
