Exodus 3:13-14 “Then Moses said to God,’If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they ask me, “What is his name?” what shall I say to them?’ God said to Moses, ’I am who I am.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: “I am has sent me to you.”’”
Identity. It’s one of the prevailing issues of our day, and it’s one of the prevailing issues of the Bible. Chief among the Bible’s concern with identity is “Who is God?” In fact, is there a God? The Bible says that Moses met God at a burning bush. It was there that God sent Moses on a mission to tell Pharaoh to free the Jewish people whom he had enslaved. To this Moses asked “Who should I say sent me?” God’s interesting response: “I am who I am . . . tell them ‘I am sent me.’” In other words, God wanted Israel to know, and He wants us to know, that He most assuredly exists. That’s the most fundamental issue of identity in all the universe. God exists. He has an identity. And His identity is not who we say it is. He is Who He says He is. He is the God Who created the universe (Genesis 1). He is “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” (Exodus 3:6). He is “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). He is our Savior (Psalm 79:9), our Strong Deliverer (Psalm 140:7), our Redeemer (Psalm 19:14), and the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He is the Lord, in every way, shape and form. For example, He is the Lord Almighty (Genesis 17:1), the Lord Most High (Genesis 14:22), the Lord My Shepherd (Psalm 23:1), the Lord that Heals (Exodus 15:26), the Lord Our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6), the Lord Who Sanctifies You (Exodus 31:13), and the Lord of Hosts (1 Samuel 1:3). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of who the Lord is. And there is only one God. It was Moses, the one who met God at the burning bush, who said “know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other” (Deuteronomy 4:39). And the One God, the only God there is, is indeed, knowable. That’s why He gave us His Word, and that’s why He created the universe. He has told us to just look at the stars, to “Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing” (Isaiah 40:26). In the words of Jesus “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent (John 17:3).”
So, do you know God, i.e., the God described above, the only God? Many others have claimed to know God or have even claimed to be God, but if the God of their claims is other than the “I Am” of the Bible, those claims are based on a stolen identity, and no more legitimate than those who are guilty of the crime of stolen identify so prevalent in the world today. You can know Him if you want to, for He has gone to supernatural lengths to identify Himself for us all.
