The Greatness of God

1 John 4:8 “God is love”

Isaiah 6:3 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty”

Psalm 25:8 “Good and upright is the Lord.”

Exodus 34:6 “The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.”

All of the statements above about God’s nature could be considered massive understatements, primarily because of how we view them, not because of what they say. When the Bible says God is good, for example, it means goodness in an infinite sense. God is goodness at the very core of His being.  When we think of goodness, we use terms like good, better, and best.  But God is pure goodness. There is no more goodness beyond the goodness of God. He is infinitely good.  And the same holds true for all other aspects of His character.  He is infinitely kind, infinitely just, infinitely wise, infinitely loving. God is love.  Perhaps my favorite hymn is “The Love of God” and my favorite verse is the last one. It goes like this:

“Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made

Were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade by trade

To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry would drain the ocean dry

Nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky

O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong!

It shall forevermore endure the saints’ and angels’ song”

That’s the idea. And to think you can substitute any other attribute of our infinite God in this verse for the word “love” and it is just as true.  That’s just a glimpse of the greatest of our awesome God.
