The Search for God’s Will

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Do you know what God’s will is for your life?  To hear some people talk, it would seem that knowing this is like a search for some great mystery.  However, it’s actually pretty simple.  Just do whatever He’s told you to do in His Word.  One example is in the verse above.  It applies to every situation in life every day of our lives.  Are you going to work for an employer somewhere today?  If you are a Christian, you’re to treat that job as if you are working for the Lord you say that you love and want to glorify.  Do your very best.  That applies to whether the boss is looking at you or not, for your boss’ boss is always looking (Ephesians 6:9).

So, you say your boss is anything but a Christian, that he or she treats you unfairly?  Maybe you’re working for the wrong boss?  This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to change jobs, just change who you’re working for in that job.  Always remember that it’s the Lord Christ you are really serving (Colossians 3:24).

Maybe you’re retired and doing some volunteer work. No pressure.  No big deal, for after all no one’s paying you.  Think again, believer. It’s the Lord Christ you are serving.  Doing something for a spouse today? Since they love you so much, they’ll understand if you get around to it whenever you get around to it.  Really?  It’s the Lord Christ you are serving.  Or maybe you’re just doing something on your own.  You live alone and you only answer to yourself.  Not really . . . It’s the Lord Christ you are serving.

Whatever that next thing is you are about to do . . . whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, even if that “man” or “woman” is yourself.  At least that’s the Lord’s will for you and me if we want to follow Him.  He’s told us this in plain speech, in black and white, unchanging in His eternal Word of Truth.  No mystery, thankfully, to know what He wants from us today.  And what a blessing to know how to serve Him at this moment in time . . . as well as the next.
